Frequently asked questions
Do you offer school holiday swimming lessons during the ACT Public School Holidays?
Yes!
I run school holiday lessons Mon-Thurs each holidays. Please email me at swimlessonsact@gmail.com for more information.
How long will it take me/my child to learn to swim?
The length of time it’ll take to learn to swim depends on a range of factors, including you/your child’s:
- Starting skill level.
- Level of water fear/anxiety.
- Past or current involvement in sport or other movement activities.
- Ability to practice outside of lessons.
- Swimming goal(s).
Unfortunately, I cannot answer this question without seeing you/your child in the water first!
Can you teach me to swim at my home pool?
Yes, depending on:
- The size of your pool & skill level of participants. Your pool will need to be at least 5m long for young children (3-5 years of age) who have not attended any swimming lessons previously. For older children/adolescents/adults with no prior swimming experience, your pool will need to be roughly 10m+ long. As participants progress, you may need to consider shifting lessons to a public pool to enable continued improvement.
- Whether or not your pool is heated. Lessons will only be provided in heated pools.
- Your location. Northside preferred.
- The season. Outdoor lessons are only available during summer.
I don’t have a home pool/my pool isn’t suitable – can you teach me at a public pool?
Yes! Please send me an email at swimlessonsact@gmail.com to inquire.
Please note that additional fees apply for lane hire and pool entry.
Do you teach children under 3 years of age?
There are many swim schools in Canberra that offer weekly group parent-child lessons for your infant/toddler to learn important water familiarisation and safety skills. These group classes are a great opportunity for you to have fun together and meet other parents and children.
If you feel group lessons are not suitable and you’d like to learn how to better support your infant/toddler to learn to swim, I can provide a couple of lessons for you both.
Lessons will focus on:
- How to safely hold your child in the water.
- How to safely, and with consent, submerge your child in a way that is enjoyable for them.
- How to help teach your child to kick and paddle.
- How to build age-appropriate water safety skills.
I do not offer ongoing lessons for children under the age of 3.
